tv   Shepard Smith Reporting  FOX News  December 13, 2013 12:00pm-1:01pm PST

12:00 pm
>> thank you all for sharing your thoughts. keep them coming. we'll keep reading them right here on he show. and thanks for being part of the real story for this in edition. tgif everybody. "shepard smith reporting" live. >> it's about to get ugly. a powerful winter storm is tracking across a large section of the nation. it could affect millions of us and trigger travel and slipping delays at the heart of the busy holiday season, so let's get to it. good friday afternoon to you and yours. forecasters say this storm is threatening to dump more than a foot of snow in some places across the lower 48. let's take a look at the wall of cold. the big wall is barely big enough today. you see where it stretches from way up there to way over the there in the middle of things. the storm will blanket towns with snow and rain for the weekend from me mississippi
12:01 pm
valley up to new england, and they also predict that the bad weather could cause flooding in some areas in dixie. let's get to rick who has the very latest from the fox weather center. this is crazy video from upstate. >> talk about lake-effect snow and people don't get the idea what lake-effect snow is, it's not a storm. it's wind that moves across the great lakes and the wind is colder than the water temperature and causes the condensation, that atmosphere to become moist, and then the wind drops the snow. the plateau and areas south of buffalo, those two little bands. doesn't look like much. now look at the video. these three areas, 58 inches of snow, shepard, this week. that's four and a half feet of snow falling across there. it is going to take a long time to rick out of that. in fact they won't. it will be mud season by the time they get out of that in the spring. but i tell you what, a little bit more of that lake-effect snow is going to fall for the
12:02 pm
next day and this other storm moves? >> i bet they still had classes at oswego. they can handle snow. >> a lot of rain across parts of texas and oklahoma, where we need it. but now it's starting to hit the colder air and there's a little snow that's going to develop on the northern side, and that's where you see from much of missouri, across the great lakes, michigan, and then across the northeast, all these areas under some type of a winter storm warning or watch or winter weather advisory, and the snowmobile totals from parts of missouri through northern indiana, michigan, will see some three to six inches fall across the area. then going towards the northeast, interesting. that i-95 corridor, always that trick, is it rain or snow, it's going to be snow at first and then cross over into rain. so maybe about a two to five-inch snowfall total around
12:03 pm
new york city, but you see these darker colors, those are some six to 12-inches and isolated areas over a foot of snow. this is a lot of ski area. they desperately need the snow. they haven't had good snow so far this season. so we'll get the good snow but a rough go tomorrow and we'll see heavy snowfall at times. temperatures behind us on sunday, not all that cold so get a little melting here, and if there's any good parts of this, it's on a saturday this is falling so you can stay inside, get something warm to eat and drink and watch tv. >> so no excuse to miss work, and going to be 14, up like monday night. >> well, behind these storms gets very cold. >> it is december. thank you, sir. >> on a more serious note. we believe -- continuing to follow the breaking developments -- the feds say they arrested a person they describe as a would-be terrorist who they say wanted to blow up the airport in wichita, kansas. they guy never had a bomb at all.
12:04 pm
officials say undercover agents gave the suspect what he thought was a bomb. nobody was ever in any danger. person after person after person said that. in their well choreographed announcement a short time ago, the agent said, quote, the threat was real, unquote, and the suspect did want to attack the airport, phony bomb or not. fbi officials say they arrest happened today while the suspect was driving to the airport. they described the suspect as a 58-year-old aviation technician who, quote, wanted to die a martyr. mike tobin has the news, live at our midwest news hub. a lot of people in this news conference but not a whole lot of detail. >> reporter: and one of the things you heard the feds out of kansas emphasize, the public was never in danger and that's because they were able to control all of the components of the bomb and make sure that the bomb would never work, and you have to go back to the summer to the point where the federal authorities say they intercepted communications from this avionics technician in which he
12:05 pm
expressed a desire to commit violent jihad against the united states. they hooked into him, started a relationship. componentses were supplied to him for what he thought would be a car bomb. apparently according to the feds he assisted in acquiring some components but they had good control over it. what the authorities need to make the arrest was the point that came this morning when they say he attempted to use his key or key card to access the airport. >> we are charged with, and have an obligation to take action and protect the public whenever an individual expresses a desire to commit violence. allowing an individual intent on killing people to proceed without government response is not an option and it will never be an option. >> reporter: now, if the allegations prove true, the desire was there. according to the authorities. this individual researched the flight schedules, time his attack, or alleged attack, for when the airport would be
12:06 pm
busiest. he assisted in acquiring parts for the bomb, and he expressed a desire to to trigger the bomb himself, killing himself in the process, and becoming a martyr. what is unusual in this case is the age of the suspect here. mr. lohan is 58 years old. generally you see your converted to islam are younger and idealistic. what is also unusual the manner the announcement was handled. an abrupt press conference and ended with authorities taking no question, although people have questions about how this went down. >> lots of questions. thanks. a number of officials came out, one after another, introducing themselves, but really scant information about what this contact was. no indication that this person, who was talking and nothing more, would ever have been able to get in contact with or in possession of anything that smooth allow him to do -- might
12:07 pm
allow him to do anything. so we called up judge napolitano, our judicial analyst, to talk about how this might move forward in the legal system and he is skeptical. i'll read his quote. it was hills day off. from the judge: this is a here we go again case. the judge says, this is -- this crime is as real also the interpreterred a at mandela's memorial. the feds find a mall content who is dope, fill him with antiamerican hatred, give him a fake bomb and arrest him. they created the fake crime, solve the fake crime and take credit for keeping us safe. they acknowledge airport security was never breached. this is the 18th of these fake crimes since the attack of 9/11. that from jump andrew napolitano. in other news, secretary of health and hum services went to miami today to promote the
12:08 pm
spanish language version of the affordable care act's web site. hours ago she poke with people about the benefits of signing up for insurance plans. >> a lot of people who do not have affordable monk their work place will now have the kind of consumer protections people are used to in employer-based insurance, where they can't be locked out because of a preexitsing condition, they have to be part of the plan, they have a full package of benefits. they're not eligible to be dumped out of the market. >> according to health and human services more floridians have enrolled than any other state on the federal exchange. nearly 18,000 over the past two months. again, that's according to hhs. analysts say that's still far short of the administration's initial target. now the feds are asking insurance companies to extend the deadline to sign up for coverage that would kick in the first of january. ed whenry is the white house. what is the white house saying
12:09 pm
about the latest changes? >> reporter: they're saying, error rates are down, and benefits will start kicking in soon. they think they're starting to turn the corner, nonetheless they're making last-minute tweaks, such as basically saying you can get your money in for your first premium right up until december 31st, even though your insurance will kick in on january 1st. insurance companies wondering how they can turn the paperwork around that quickly. so there's a question whether or not the people out of the 1.2 million who have already quote-unquote enrolled, how many of those will actually have insurance starting january 1st here's jay carney. >> we're going to continue to take steps to make sure where we can make some fixes that will help consumers, and we'll do that. and -- because the goal here is, again, not a perfect web site, not the elegance of the rollout.
12:10 pm
i think we failed that. right? >> reporter: so they acknowledge they failed the october 1st october 1st deadline. now this january 1st deadline comping. jay carney insisting today that they don't basically need a plan b in case people don't have insurance on january 1st january 1st because they're confident they will have insurance. again, he himself noted, they missed the last deadline. we'll see about this one. >> republicans are using this to keep up attacks on the whole thing. >> no doubt. they're saying another one of the tweaks ills that secretary sebelius is saying that basically, even if your plan is changing on january 1st, they want to extend the time for you to be able to go to your doctor in the month of january even if the doctor is no longer in your blue plan's network. we all know that maybe the doctor will take you, maybe the doctor won't if you're no longer in that network, and maybe the insurance company will pay for the visit or maybe they won't if that doctor is not in the network. so a lot of confusion and
12:11 pm
republicans like marco rueow -- rubio say that math won't add up. >> you'll see the federal government have to step in and provide a cash infusion to keep the insurance companies from going insolvent and that will be extremely unpopular. so we have only seen a tip of the iceberg of the stories that will come out. >> another bad story, an group said their lie of the year for 2013 is the president says, if your like your plan, you can keep it. jay carney said they're not cob -- contesting the claim but they're trying to turn the page. >> ed, thank you very much. the attorney for a woman who is accusing the heisman trophy front runner of rape, today called the police investigation by the tall -- tallahassee police department a complete failure. this is not over, and the complainant says the cops are
12:12 pm
putting football ahead of a potential crime. police are defending their investigation. they're asking for the state to come in and investigate. this accusation against jameis winston has just expanded and we'll have all the details for you. i'm getting a number of new bits of information about what appears to be a shooting that is -- has happened at centennial, colorado, at a high school there. according to all the information we have been able to gather, one to two people may have been shot. there are indications there may be a for at the school. indications a number of schools are now on lockdown. centennial, colorado, of course, the area where they're trying james holme, the movie massacre suspect from aurora, colorado, the littleton colorado school district which is a school district of columbine high school is on lockdown. we'll have a developing story and we'll get to it as "shepard smith reporting" continues on this friday afternoon.
12:13 pm
12:14 pm
12:15 pm
>> now breaking news out of centennial, colorado, school security officer confirms there has been a shooting at arapaho high school in centennial, colorado. reports indicate one person has been hit, others are indicating two people have been hit. we don't know whether they're students or somebody else or faculty or staff or somebody from offcampus. we don't know. we are informed that no one is
12:16 pm
yet in custody, and this is an active situation. the arap hoe county sheriff's deputies and the district security officer are responding to the scene. the school has 2,000 students. this is colorado, the kansas border, this is denver. this is centennial right here. so this is denver, this is centennial, and littleton is right over here as well. this is littleton, colorado. they're kind of adjacent to one another. here's littleton. here's centennial, and they come together right here along this loop which runs around denver. so this is a familiar area to all of us who covered the shooting out there at columbine high school, and now they're trying the aurora, colorado, shooting suspect. and five producers -- alicia is on the phone do you have knee more? >> reporter: what we're gifting
12:17 pm
is a lot of it is from the scanner. there was a molotov cocktail found on the suspect. that is as much as we have in terms of a suspect. if there's more suspects we don't know. this school has more than 2,000 students and we're one week out from the christmas break. one of the larger schools, one of the larger campuses in the littleton school district in a very large community, one of the larger suburbs in the denver area. parents are being informed where to go to check on their children. as you know, this is actually a particularly delicate situation. here in this community -- this isn't that far from littleton, colorado, which is near -- the high school where we were all together many years ago, columbine high school. so everybody is heading down to this area. there was a fire at the school. we're not sure if it is still going on. we just know there were reports there. two victims, and what we're
12:18 pm
hearing at this point, and this is something that occurred shortly after lunchtime there, according to arab hoe county sheriff's office. >> i wonder, they're so sensitive there now, i wonder if you're curious at all why there hasn't been a statement from, frankly, anybody. >> i am curious why we haven't seen anything on twitter, haven't heard if there's any statements coming out of the school itself or out of the district. that could be because it's still an active shooter situation. there are a lot of possibilities here. there are a lot of lessons that were learn ute of columbine what to do and what not to do. if there is an active shooter situation, they have locked things down. we haven't heard if it's -- if the school is in lockdown right now. we do know there are officers there, and that there are ambulances headed there as well.
12:19 pm
i am curious as well, though, why we haven't heard more from officials other than the fact the dispatcher says there's been a shooting and a fire. >> stay with us. from our rockie mountain newsroom, "associated press --" rueters sent out a bull -- police responding to shooting. the post reports there are reports of a fire. the arap o'county sheriff's office confirms officers were at the school but declined to give further detail. so here's the school alicia mentioned. a very large one. more than 2,000 students in this school. we have indications now that the littleton, colorado, school district, which this is a part, is on lockdown. we expect that the choppers will be overhead shortly and we'll be able to bring you some context and perspective. at this moment there's nothing to indicate any students have
12:20 pm
been hurt. there's nothing to indicate any faculty. we do not have the information yet except what we just told you we have gotten from police. we'll have more in a moment. there is word of big changes coming to the way government keeps tabs on is in responsible to the outcry we learned that the feds are monitoring american's phone calls and computers. that's right after this.
12:21 pm
12:22 pm
12:23 pm
pa. >> the attorney for the woman who accused a college football star of rape is demanding a new investigation. hours before what could be the biggest day of the star quarterback's life. tomorrow is the announcement of the heisman trophy winner, and the florida state university quarterback, jameis winston, is a clear front runner. this guy is about as big as it gets in college football.
12:24 pm
he led the seminoles to the number one undisputed ranking in college football in america, and a spot in the national championship game next month against auburn. last week, florida prosecutors cleared him in a rape investigation. a fellow florida state university student last year accused jameis winston of raping her after a night of drinking. today the accuser's lawyer slammed the investigators with the tallahassee police department and said winston's star status helped get him off the hook. >> it appears to me to be a complete failure of an investigation of a rape case. do i believe that the complete failure of an investigation of a rape case was related to the fact that this gentleman was on the football team? i do. >> for their part, tallahassee police say they stand by their investigation, but the attorney says they didn't interview key
12:25 pm
witnesses, investigatedded accuser rather than the accused rapist, and had trouble collecting dna evidence. with us ann marie mcle roy. do you see problems here? >> there are. a apparently the attorney says there were injuries, one would assume if this was consensual there wouldn't be injuries. temperature inconsistencies in the statements. this could be a case where it would be warranted to have somebody come in and maybe take another look at it, and the fact this kissed up for a heisman trophy, could that have impacted people's views? certainly. but on the other hand, if the district attorney doesn't feel there's sufficient evidence to be able to actually convict this young man, then the obligation is actually not to bring a case against him. if they don't think they have enough to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, they shouldn't bring a case against him. >> this can work both ways, and the call could be made that had
12:26 pm
we not known jameis winston, the star of the florida state seminoles and they not found adequate information to arrest him, we never would have known anything about this, never would have been a call for a followup. so there's more than one way to look at these very difficult situations, but this one it appears is more than he said -- she said as people opened doors. there's testimony that a woman opened the door, saw an act ongoing, that the woman in question here came back, closed the door, and the act continued. so, it matters who you believe. >> these cases come down to he said/she said inch this case actually the accused has a couple of witnesses that support what he says, this was consensual, so now you have a situation where the evidence does seem to be more on the side of the accused as opposed to on the side of the victim. so as we're looking at proving
12:27 pm
beyond a reasonable doubt, whether jurors will look at it and say you have the guy saying he didn't do it and it was consensual, you have two other witnesses in the apartment, one of whom actually walks in and it's clearly a consensual act going on, and he says he walked in twice, and both times it seemed very consensual. so it's a very difficult thing in a case like this to then get over the burden of being able to show beyond a reasonable doubt that this young man is guilty. and there is a real downside on both sides you have a potential victim here and you also have a young man who has his whole career and livelihood in front of him, whose reputation in any event is going to be impacted even if they don't bring charges. >> a difficult situation for everybody. >> want to take our viewers out to centennial, colorado. we have our first live chopper pictures. this is the first time i've seen these. there's an active scene here. i'm told this is the entrance to
12:28 pm
the school. these are counties and locals there who are on scene. the choppers have been over the school and though there were some reports -- we haven't confirmed them -- multiple report there there -- there might have been a fire. the chopper has not indicated that. so if there was any smoke, we haven't been able to see it as the choppers went overhead. there's obviously a large group of police there, and now to this massive school building. obviously there's been snow there. and at first glance, we don't know what to make of this yet. what we do know there are reports that one to two students have been shot -- not students -- forgive me -- one to two persons have been shot. we don't know whether students or faculty or any idea. we further do not know who this suspect is, but you can see, what appears to be students outside the school now. from what we can see there's no
12:29 pm
sense of panic. i can see students on their cell phone, which could be any normal day with kidsed these days, and the initial indication was there was nobody in custody but according to our denver-based correspondent there were some indications she received that there may have been a molotov cocktail involved here. the littleton, colorado, school district, in the town of centennial, which is adjacent to the school district where columbine was. that was jefferson county school district. they're eight miles apart. so, there's an active scene here, it would happen, but from the looks of the people standing around, you can see an officer here who is barking out instructions but there's no chaos or panic and what appears to be a somewhat chilly afternoon but people are in short sleeves. the frustration here is we have the report, confirmed by multiple sources, yet we're not
12:30 pm
getting any tweets or news conference or any official release. so my judgment is to err on the side of caution and let this play out. kids are running across the snowy field with arms in their air would suggest to me they're following protocol. anybody that remembers what happened in the wake of the shooting at columbine high school, students ran out with their hands up, just so that nobody is brought towards something that would scare anyone. your hands are in the air, and that way no one is -- it's a horrible thing to see, isn't it. students coming out with their hands in the air. but police are acting, i'm quite confident, with caution. the frustration is we don't know what to tell you at this moment except that we have reports that two people are shot inside the school. we now have pictures from our station in denver, kdvr, our fox station there, at 1:30 in the
12:31 pm
afternoon with students out on a snowy day, and you can see some of them hugging down here from the chopper shot, and more on the top. and what we can hope is that we have had a rough scare here, and that everybody is fine. and unless and until we hear from police we'll stick with that. centennial, colorado, on a friday afternoon. and our coverage will continue when we have some new information after this.
12:32 pm
12:33 pm
>> breaking news continues out of denver, colorado -- actually centennial, colorado, a bedroom community. we have information from the denver post newspaper -- you can bring that to me -- the latest we have is, according to the reporting of the denver post, one student shot who other students in the cafeteria at centennial -- in centennial at this high school. a dispatcher with the arapaho county sheriff's office says
12:34 pm
friday afternoon there had been a shooting. the reports of the shooting and a fire was the initial reporting, and a look at live pictures with studentings -- students coming out with their hands in the air. we should stay with this. the reporting we're getting indicates this happened in the cafeteria. i'm not blind to the memory of the shooting that happened at columbine, as everyone knows that happened in a cafeteria, and there was a lot more to follow. so if the denver post reporting is accurate and this shooting happened in the cafeteria, and now we have these very familiar scenes of students coming out of the building with their hands in the air, you can only imagine what this was like for these children. if the denver post reporting is correct and suddenly a student is firing off rounds in the cafeteria during the school day, it would have to bring back memories at least for their parents of that horrible day in
12:35 pm
littleton when we had such a familiar scene. these pictures with the kid witch their hands in the air. it's to err on the side of caution. in this part of colorado, they develop specific protocols. what will be down, what the instructions well be, how we will handle casualty situations of this kind, should they happen at a school or factory or anyplace where lots of people gather, and we were part of -- we were covering this training for people, and this is s.o.p., standard operating procedure. hands in the air, and look at this. everyone being frictioned here. -- frisked here, making sure that nobody else has any sort of weapon. this protocol was put together over a period of months and even years, if my memory serves and this is exactly how they planned that it would happen. if there were another incident of that kind, and you can see these kids here, in short-sleeved shirts and khakis
12:36 pm
here, and the police security officer coming up to frisk them all. so each one is frisked, turned around, frisked again, and then allowed to move on, and the others are in the line waiting, and i looks like some of the girls are consoling each other. i wish i had answers for you about what happened with the students. the report from the "denver post" are one student shot two other students. there are other reports from other changes i cannot confirm, of a molotov cocktail in some way being involved. i have no reports from police on that. in fact, anybody on the news deck, if anything comes in officially from police? mark who is charge out here today says nothing at all from the sheriff's office there in arapaho county, nothing from the centennial, colorado, police department, not from arapaho high school. this school with some 2,000 in centennial, except these pictures which are as familiar,
12:37 pm
frankly, it's sending chills town my spine on that dark day in littleton, i was there a few hours after this happened. with police with their guns drawn, as students come out of school. obviously here to protect in the event there's more to this than they know. erring on the side of caution. but on that day, we arrived as students were still wandering about the property, and after all of us watched the video of kids with hands in the air all day, and just dumbstruck by what happened. the tears flowing on that campus. it's our hope and prayer at this point that whatever it is that happened in there that injuries, if there are any, are not life-threatening and these kids will be fine, and the scene in the library is not something that will stay with these students forever. i don't know about you but never in my days in high school did you ever have to come out, thank god, with your hands in the air.
12:38 pm
but you have to imagine, not so cold day, a lot of kids in short sleeves, still some snow on the ground, walking out single file by the thousands with your hands in the air because, according to the reporting of the "denver post" a student has taken a shot at a couple of kids. rick will give us a little more. mark is indicating, who is in charge on the news deck, and where am i going to find these? these are coming -- this is the "denver post" reporter who is covering this, and student are telling me at least two students were shot by another student in the cafeteria with a hash tag tag arapaho high school. school staff are trying to get the names of the students outside the building. students tell me they heard multiple shots from the cafeteria. everyone ran out of the school. this is from the "denver post" and everyone is being ordered to get away from the school by
12:39 pm
police. police helicopter is now overhead. so that's what we have in the way of tweets, and they continue to file out of the school with police on guard, and it's my hope that in some way, parents have been able to get information ab have not. because at this point there is no information of any kind, except what is coming from reporters who are on the ground. we have nothing official of any kind from anyone at arapaho county, aron hoe high school, from centennial police department or the arapaho county sheriffs department, for that matter from state police or anyone else. rick, come on over here. i want to keep this pictures up. rick leventhal was with us back in the day but these sceneses are familiar. >> i haven't heard much more than you have been reporting but it is interesting this is one year tomorrow since the shooting at sandy hook, and that's the story we have been working on all day, what's happened in the
12:40 pm
time since sandy hook, and it strikes me that gun control advocates will look at this and say, here's more evidence we need tougher restrictions on guns, and gun right supporters will tell you here's more evidence there should be armed guards in schools. >> we'll learn in the hours or days ahead houston strict their security -- how strict their security is in some schools they implemented very strict security codes and? places doors were locked, you had to have permission to enter campus. this is a school eight miles away and i don't know the specifics of the rules at arapaho. >> some schools have metal detectors that you must walk through before you enter the school. i don't know if they have that in this school district either, but they do obviously take precautions, they don't want kids walking into school with weapons and they try to prevent that from happening. somehow his died got in with a gun. >> just got an update from our local station in denver. their reporter is now reporting that the shooter, quote,
12:41 pm
appeared to be down inside the school as of 1:30 mountain standard time and s.w.a.t. teams are evacuating students inside the school at the time. so if there's good news to be had, as we watch this single-file of students coming out of this massive education center in centennial, it is that julie hayden of fox 31, fox for denver, ing now reporting the shooter appears to be down inside the school, and that the shooter at least is neutralized. how -- i've given you what i know. we still have nothing from police, and, rick, part of what we learned in the years after littleton was that they were going to have procedures so that parents and family members and loved ones across the nation would be able to get information and now it appears -- is it this setting up for a news conference? victor? first ground pictures we have. we have no indication of a news conference. we don't have a single tweet
12:42 pm
from the sheriffs office. >> but there's protocol they have to follow. clear the buildings, check every student that comes out. they have to then search the students to make sure they're not carrying weapons and then go through the school room-by-room to make sure those rooms are secure and clear. so it's a lengthy process did you see the couple thousand students that attend this high school being herded out. all by searched and cleared and then they have to do the same thing inside the school. >> we just got an indication from a local station -- happens to be the cbs television station in denver and our network news service station, there is a news conference being planned for 1:45, which is two and a half minutes from now. i'm sure the time is in flux. but so far they've not done any tweeting, and we have nothing to indicate that this situation is over. certainly the pictures indicate they're making sure that no one else has a weapon and that nobody else might bring danger to anyone who is here. >> that's the first priority for law enforcement, not necessarily
12:43 pm
to tell the public but to make surely the school is secure, the kids are safe and they isolated the gunman and neutralized the gunman in some way. >> now the chapper has panned over to a local -- the chopper has pans over to a local food restaurant where the kids are gathering. we don't know whether they sent them here but they were changing to make sure that nobody was in cain danger, nobody had any weapons, and then they were releasing them to go for the day. my producer just told me that there's a news conference expected in a matter of moments. is that correct? two minutes now for the new conference. this is a local burger king and the kids came over here after being dismissed from the school. i can only imagine what it was like in the cafeteria. a massive school. >> you said it yourself, growing up, we didn't have these things in high school. might have been a fistfight. >> i remember that's -- not to equate this to that horrible day in littleton but the similarity
12:44 pm
are obvious, and on that particular day, when we were on the ground in littleton that day, it was these recalling recf what had happened in this cafeteria and this imprint made on folks who were, what, 13 years older than these people. so i'm not sure -- that's the stuff of discussion, not of memory for these students. >> so far there's no word on the condition of the people who may have been shot inside the school. >> in fact, we have nothing confirmed by police, pair met deck -- marry -- paramedics, hospitals, state police, number. we have seen no pictures of ambulances. we have been told by the reporting of the kdbr in denver, the shooter is believed to be down inside the school. we have no confirmation on that, either. i'm told we're about 30 seconds away now from a news conference, maybe we'll learn a little more.
12:45 pm
but right now what we have is pictures and reports. i've looked to see what else it is that the "denver post" may have or other sources inside denver. our team on the news deck is watching for tweets from the school. we're getting a lot of information from students, but nothing officially from police. kelly rice is here watching tweets as they come in and you're getting a lot of retweeting but no -- prayers to everyone but no official information. >> no. this tweet here just says, somebody reported to another station that they heard four gunshots, that students inside are reporting they heard gunshots and ran to the door. >> we have seen a number of tweets from the people who used that number. one thing we know is that first reports are almost always inaccurate. when you're in the middle of a normal day and sitting in a cafeteria and suddenly there are shots fired you memory of what just happened is historically speaking, from my experience,
12:46 pm
often not reliable. chris has some information that is coming in as well. this is from -- >> 9 news in denver is saying that one 15 to 16-year-old victim with a gushed wound, unknown gender, unknown condition. >> that's from 9 news in denver, which i the nbc station, which we have no affiliation with, but that what they're reporting, confirmed, one 15 to 16-year-old victim with a gunshot wound, unknown gender, unknown condition. and hash tag arapaho high school if you want to follow it. our local station is kdvr, and they're live with continuing coverage. >> we see sheriffs vehicles still very much rushing up here. if you zoom over here, students are still evacuating from the school itself. most of the situation we are told from students in the area, happened in the area of the library, where the students say they heard the gunshots from.
12:47 pm
we're waiting for a formal briefing from the police once they get this active situation under control, with the scene you're seeing it's going to take time. that's what we have from arapaho high school. >> now we're hearing library. we have dozens and dozens of bits of information that suggested it was the cav -- cafeteria. if we can listen to kdvr and see these live pictures. you can see the frisking is underway as we listen to kdvr report. >> one student was having an anxiety attack, given an inhaler. the ambulance rushed over to assist -- >> breaking news, we just gotten word here on the fox news deck from a spokesman at the regional hospital there, that one student has been transported to the hospital. that one student is now in critical condition. again, that is official from a
12:48 pm
spokesperson at the hospital. our fox 31 local coverage continues. >> the hospital right now, frightening situation. >> is littleton public school. all of the schools in the littleton public school district have been placed on lockdown. this is affecting schools in a lot of places. in fact terry creek tells us their schools have been nature secure perimeter, meaning students are still in class but they are not allowed to leave right now. this happened just an hour ago, so still unfolding. we understand that two people have public hurt, -- been hurt, taken to the hospital. tell you more about arapaho high school. you're seeing the athletic field where students are gathering. there are 2200 students in all that attend encloseses -- classes at the high school. they have 70 classrooms and they're going classroom to classroom, trying to make sure that everyone is okay. >> there's a s.w.a.t. team on the scene right now. patting down students they evacuated. and we just founds -- found out
12:49 pm
one student is in critical condition. you heard justin report that at least one of the victims was shot in the head. as far as the gunman we don't have the identity. >> an important point on this matter, as we listen to fox 31. we know a shooter, because the hospital confirmed through official sources, a student is in the hospital and in critical condition. we do not know if the student was shoot by the accused or -- in some way the shooter might have taken a bullet. we don't know that. i just got one other bit of information from our producers in the bought and that ills that the "denver post is reporting that authorities are now at the locker, at the locker and searching the locker of the student accused in this shooting. we had earlier reports from kdvr fox 31 that the shooter was down inside the building. we don't know that shooter's condition, but it's certainly possible that the shooter is the one who is in the hospital in critical condition. we were led to believe that a
12:50 pm
news conference would begin five minutes ago, and as we continue to watch the live feed from arapaho high school, no news conference. the only thing official we have gotten at all from the arapaho county sheriff's office is this one tweet, when i put this up here, 19 minutes ago. now been 23 minutes. it says, parents of hash tag arapaho high students are asked to go to shepard of the hills church on university boulevard, and that is the extent of the information that we have been given officially. that and from the hospital, that one student is in critical condition. and the scenes of people -- students being taken out of the school. rick leventhal, we anticipate we'll be getting more information in just a moment, but the video, i think, tells as much of the story as we can pull together. >> it's remarkable footage to see high school kids being frisked on the track outside the
12:51 pm
school by law. , some of them in heavy s.w.a.t. gear. halves to be upsetting for them. hearing gunshots fired in the school has to be pretty traumatic for these kids. some of them, certainly. and it's a very tough situation. they clearly are on top of it. >> we're getting new tweets from the "denver post." look at these aerials coming in. now the armored vehicles are coming in. this is from ryan parker? >> at the "denver post." he says authorities are doing everything they can to account for every single student. this is adam jones, whose sister goes to high school, said students are still locked in rooms and very scared. one of the command posts right now, he says is discussing their next move, and this is what you mentioned behalf. he is hearing that authorizes are locking down the student/agenda gusman's locker right now. >> this this reporter we believe was first to arrive on the scene at least for ""denver post."
12:52 pm
>> and he is provide going details. >> what is happening on the deck, persons are monitoring different feedment some from official sources, radio stations we trust, others are monitoring tweets and facebook posts and instagram. when this thing happens in the six weeks since we have had all of these -- this facility together, we have a news conference that is beginning right now. let's listen. >> entered the school armed with a shotgun, was looking for an individual teacher he identified by name. the teacher began to understand he was being looked at. exited the school. one student confronted the armed student some was shot. that student has been transported in serious condition to a local hospital. we immediately activated our active shooter protocols. we had resources from agencies wind the south metro area assist
12:53 pm
us. -- assisting us. we cleared the school and the students quickly. while we were securing the school we found one additional student with a minor gunshot wound. that sound has been transplanted to local hospital. while we were securing the school and ensuring the safety of the students and staff in the school, we located what we believe to be the suspect and the active shooter. that individual is currently deceased and he apparently killed himself. that will still be part of the investigation. we know the identity of the suspect. i am not going release it at this time. i want to repeat to you, the suspect has been found inside the school and he has deceased as a result of what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. we are slowly and methodically clearing the school, and ensuring that all of our students are safe. they were safer inside their locked school room classes than they would have been had woe
12:54 pm
allowed them to exit, and that was part of our strategy and our protocol. we are now slowly but methodically allowing students to leave the school in groups. we are bringing them to a location that is directly east of where we're standing. they will be boarded on school buss and transported to a church south of here called shepard of the hill. at shepard of the hills we'll reunite families with their students. we have directed families to go to shepherd of the hills church so they can be reunited with their students within the next half hour to 45 minutes. i will also tell you that the response protocol around active shooters were put into place immediately. the first deputy sheriffs and police officers that were on scene, immediately entered the school to engage the shooter if they could locate that individual, and also keep the students absolutely safe. before i'll take any brief
12:55 pm
questions -- and they will be very brief -- i will do another very detailed brief at 3:00 p.m., and i'm not sure of the location but we'll put out an all-media release and let you know exactly where that 3:00 p.m. brief will happen. again, at 3:00 p.m., i will give you additional details, and i will let you know where our investigation stands. from this point i will tell you that i will allow media trucks and media representatives to place themselves in the westbound lanes on dry creek road. in order to accommodate your needs. if you want to put your trucks and vehicles in the turn lane, westbound dry creek, just east of university, that where is we'll set up for you to. have your vehicles. >> going by right now, tell us about that maybe and how -- [inaudible] >> i'll share that with you at 3:00. at this point in time it's a

12:57 pm
>> the call the was at 12:33 p.m. today. we have information that my deputies i believe they have the shooter down -- the initial call for -- of the -- again, we have one student that was transported in serious condition with a gunshot wound. i can't go into any further detail. we have a second -- -- gunshot wound or the cause. i'll have that information at 3:00. [inaudible] >> at this point in time we have not been able locate a second suspect but that's our ongoing investigation. that's why we're dealing with family and colleagues of the suspect to identify any other potential suspects. we'll assume other suspects until we know differently, and that was the focus of the deputies and police officers that entered this school to alleviate the threat.
12:58 pm
[inaudible] >> no weapons found other than the one weapon that was used in the shooting. [inaudible] >> i won't go into that.
